Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on April 21 sent his condolences on the death of Pope Francis.

The Office for Government Policy Coordination, Prime Minister's Secretariat that day said it sent a condolatory message to Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, saying, "The government and people of the Republic of Korea share the sorrow of Catholics around the world and extend their heartfelt condolences."

In his message, Acting President Han said, "The Pope conveyed a message of love and solidarity to humanity through his teaching that 'we are all brothers and sisters' and led an existence of peace and reconciliation, dedicating his entire life to the poor and the marginalized."

"During his visit to Korea in 2014, he prayed for peace and unification of the Korean Peninsula and delivered a message of hope to Korean churches and people, and at the closing Mass of the 2023 Lisbon World Youth Day, he announced 'Seoul, Korea' as the host city of the 2027 World Youth Day," he added. "I believe that he recognized Korea as the center of world peace and expressed special affection for the country."

"I will remember the teachings of love and peace that the Pope spread throughout the world," Acting President Han said. "I pray that the Pope's noble soul finds eternal rest and peace in the arms of Jesus Christ."
